My Grandmother Does SEO

Today, one of the hottest buzzwords in Internet Marketing is SEO – Search Engine Optimization. You probably already have some idea of what it is. But in case you don’t:
SEO is a set of methods and activities aimed at improving a website’s placement in the search results of the search engines. Today, since well over 90% of search is carried out on Google, Yahoo and MSN, SEO activities are mainly focused on doing well in those 3 major search engines.

So the big question is  – how do you do it?  How do you ensure that your beautifully designed site, filled with compelling information about your products will appear on Google  — and don’t forget, if it does not appear in the top 30 results chances are there will not be too many who will have the pleasure to visit.

Well, it’s not an easy answer. And no, my grandmother does not do SEO. But lately, I see that everyone begins to understand that it is not enough to simply build a nice web site – so all of the designers start slapping the buzzphrase “Search Engine Optimization” on their list of services. Some customers even understand that it’s not enough to build an amazing website that offers amazing products and content.  But what not many people understand is that they need to look at the entire opportunity the Internet presents for their business and figure out how it fits in and what their goals can/should be.
So when your web designer suggests that after he builds your site, his grandmother will SEO it for you, turn around and run.

It’s not just about any single thing. And there is no magic.  Without planning you will not make your fortune on the Internet. You need to plan your site, no matter what market you are in, from beginning to end, with specific goals in mind. When you start looking for someone to design your site, don’t just focus on “nice” design. You need someone with years of online marketing experience under their belt – someone who knows how to guide you, knows what works, knows what is reasonable and will lead you towards achieving results.
