SMX Israel 2012 was sold out. The sessions were packed with a local crowd hungry for information about the latest trends, insights and tools for SEO, PPC and SEM. I attended lots of great lectures, some were even controversial and cutting edge.
For those who could not make it and don’t have the time to read and research, you can pretty much boil it all down to these few key points about the state of Internet Marketing today (with that said I am very glad to have attended):

Tomer Honen, Search Quality Strategist at Google – “People are spending hours looking at Google Analytics. They get a kick out of seeing who visits, what they do on the site and how they get there. But it is only truly interesting if you do something with all of that information.”

Oliver Amar from Get Taxi – In his talk he suggests that Google hates SEO so much that they will penalize sites not just for implementing blackhat SEO, but for implementing whitehat SEO textbook practices. Can anyone say SEO page title? Dixon Jones, of Majestic SEO, said, “Never Tweet, Facebook or enter any SEO tools using Chrome.” Think about it.

Check out these slides by Eli Feldblum (who is just brilliant) from RankAbove.

What should I blog about?

Ever since content took center stage in SEO and online marketing strategy, I am repeatedly asked by marketers how to come up with ideas for good blog posts. Last night, when someone asked me this question for the millionth time, I had a déjà-vu. I was back to when my kids would come home from swimming and Karate practice asking me, “What’s for dinner?” Then, my first instinct was to yell, as I lifted my head from the newspaper, “I don’t know, look what’s in the fridge and warm it up.”

But soon enough they made it clear that humus and defrosted pita will not cut it for yet another night nigh. I had to get up from the sofa and come up with a better idea to satisfy the endless appetite of my teenagers. Soon enough I came up with some great ideas that would satisfy their hunger pangs. And it just so happens it will work for those of you suffering from blog writers block as well.

1. Start with the obvious. What is already in the fridge? In 99% of family kitchens, you can find plenty of eatable stuff. You might have to move some bottles out of the way or dig around the pantry, but trust me, you’ve got some good stuff there. How does this relate to your blog posts? There is always something, even if it seems as basic or trivial as a bag of rice, that you can communicate to your audience. You can always spice up the rice and turn it into a great meal. Small facts or events can be spiced up, mixed with the right SEO phrases and you get a blog post with some life. It could be an insight from the latest conference you attended, an interview with your CEO, videos from your latest event or that study that was done about your industry and help back up your own offering.

Warning: content relevancy comes with an expiration date.

2. Find the good stuff inside. Even if the avocado is brown on the outside, it’s still got some good green unspoiled stuff in the middle. Worked on a presentation few months ago that had some successful slides you can use? Pull out the good, sexy images and expand on them.

3. Lessons From my Mother’s Kitchen – Make a G’vetch

G’vetch is easy to make: Take all your leftover vegetables, add 2 spoons of tomato sauce, some olive oil, garlic, melted soup mix , spices, mix well and put it in the oven for 45 minutes on high temperature. Put some effort into the presentation — lay it nicely on a plate with some lettuce on the bottom, nesting the G’vetch like a colorful work of art and voila! Your kids are going to love it. Take a bunch of information your audience could be interested in and turn it into an infographic or a how-to video. Your audience will eat it up and ask for seconds!

Warning: High likelihood I’ll turn this post into G’vetch, I mean an infographic, in a few weeks.

4. Get your kids to prepare the meal

All kids like to cook. They get much more excited about a dinner they prepared or helped to make. How does that translate to blog writing? Think surveys, quizzes, polls, competitions, social discussions, etc. Engagement, participation.

5. Order a Pizza

Still couldn’t come up with anything to cook? OK, everyone deserves an occasional Pizza night. In fact, it adds to the mix and changes things up a bit. There is nothing wrong with asking your colleagues or any other person with authority to be a guest blogger. The variety and new style will be a refreshing change for your audience. At our house, every Tuesday is Pizza night, the night that we just need to take a break from the routine. Sometimes we even order Chinese.

A recent story in the New York Times told the story of how the giant retailer, JC Penney fell victim to a Google cleanup campaign. It came to light that JC Penney was using some questionable tactics to improve its ranking for many keyword search terms in the Search Engines. Now what does that mean?

First of all, it means that if such a major brand (and huge Google advertiser) has been “caught”, than you also may be caught. Second, it means that if a major brand felt the need to do it (or its SEO firm felt the need), then many, many other companies are following suit. In fact, a TechCrunch article published just a few hours ago, reveals a new backlink audit service that has found 25 % of sites have illegitimate backlinks that put their ranking in danger.

So apparently JC Penney hired someone who either told them (probably not) or did not tell them (more likely) how they do SEO and how they can successfully get JC Penney to rank high for lots of important and lucrative keyword phrases. This SEO company then went out and paid lots and lots of website owners to place links back to JC Penney. What does that really mean? As an example, I get offers on a daily basis to add links to my own web sites back to other sites that I have no relationship to. By simply adding a link such as “Vacation Resort Orlando” or “Lowest Credit Fees” or “Play Poker for Free” to a page on one of my sites, a link broker is willing to pay me a small annual or monthly fee. And no, I’ve never accepted an offer. There is nothing “illegal” in doing so. It just contributes to making the Internet a bigger junkyard than it already has become.

So now the question is why is this bad and if you can’t buy links then how do you get them? Google does not want you to buy links. And if they figure out that you are buying links (and they can’t always figure that out) or even suspect that you are (even if you are not), you can find your site sent to the deep depths of the result pages for eternity. And there is nothing you can do about it. And truthfully, you deserve it, even if you did not know that someone was buying links for you (I’m going to write another post about that soon).

The reason they don’t want you to buy links is simple. It’s cheating. You see, a back link is just like a vote in an election. To Google’s algorithm, it means that another unrelated site thinks that your site is an authority on a certain topic and worth a visit. Other sites are telling Google that they like your site by linking back with anchor text. Anchor text is the actual phrase or word in the link.

For example, if there is a site about Internet Addiction and other sites link to that site using the anchor text Internet Addiction, then Google knows that when someone searches for help with an “Internet Addiction”, that website may be worthwhile and relevant to the search and therefore should appear high up in search engine results. However, if I buy those links, than it’s no different than a politician buying votes. So you can understand why Google does not want anyone to purchase links – because it is a blatant attempt to cheat the system. In the case of most companies, like JC Penney, a link broker is selling these links in bulk and it is easy to detect that something fishy is going on because some of the links are coming from completely unrelated content. JC Penney had a link to their Baby Furniture category coming from a Thailand Tourist site.

The reason so many companies and even respectable companies are driven towards using tactics like buying back links is because it is the single hardest part of search engine optimization (SEO). Another reason SEO companies started using the tactic is because the industry is under so much pressure to perform. Clients want to be on the first page of Google and they don’t care how that happens.

The reality of the situation is that if you contact a webmaster of another site, he is going to ignore your request, unless you give him a really good reason not to ignore it. The sites that exist today and are willing to add links usually involve an automated submission. And as you can imagine, any site that allows anyone to auto-submit a link, is probably not so worthy.

What this all leads to is the fact that building backlinks should not be about running a “link campaign” and hiring a bunch of workers in India. Google wants it to be about you getting honest votes of confidence in your content. And honest votes of content can be had whenever you provide good content. Furthermore, Google is making valiant efforts to prove that following their webmaster guidelines is worthwhile. Those of us who have been building good sites with good content with visitors in mind are seeing big benefits in the most recent Google algorithm updates.

So what is the best way to get back links?

Content!!!!!

If you run a diet site and provide a calorie counter, you can bet you will get lots of links back to your calories counting tool.

If you sell jewelry and provide a humorous guide for men on how to know what type of jewelry their wives will like, you can bet you will get lots of links back to your guide.

If you sell toilets and have a “how the flush of this toilet sounds” application on your site, you can bet tons of other sites will be pointing it out with a link (I wonder if anyone has actually done this — it’s a great idea I think!).

With all my gripes about Google, I think they are pushing a good thing here. They are pushing website owners to think creatively, to provide quality and to be honest.

Traditional website design presumes that we can manage our users’ experience on our site. The user arrives to the homepage and navigates to where he wants to go. But most people arrive to your site via search. That means that many of your website visitors are going to land on a page INSIDE your site and not on the homepage. What does that mean for your site design and navigation?

Basically, it means that in order to deliver a positive user experience and capture your audience, you should take into consideration that any page in your site is a potential landing page. And what does it mean to take that into consideration? It means that wherever a visitor lands, there are several elements that you need to make sure you have covered:

From whatever page a visitor lands on, they should be able to navigate through your site and not be left stranded.

Call to Action – from every page a visitor may land on, there should be a clear call to action. Be ready to capture them from the moment they arrive.

The page should not assume anything about the visitor’s knowledge of the brand, product or company. Remember, each website page may be the visitor’s first engagement with your company.

As part of an Internet Marketing project we are doing for a medical device company, I took on working on the SEO for their German website. I don’t speak German (well, I can count to 10 and recite the dialog I learned in 6th grade about someone studying in Heidelberg).

Admittedly, this was a little risky. Command of the language and the content is an important part of doing good, quality SEO work as well as contributing to the overall online position of a product or company. But I found that the challenge was manageable, in part due to the incredible convenience of Google translate, but also due to the thorough and professional techniques with which we approach each online marketing project that we do.

Having already been working with the client for a few months, I knew the product and the market well. Furthermore, I suspect that the German SEO industry is not as advanced as the US and so optimizing may be less competitive, although still quite competitive – at least in the particular medical market we are working on in this project. But no matter what market or language we are talking about, ranking for any single keyword looks like a fantasy today. I will admit that I am quite shocked that within 2 months, we succeeded to not only start ranking (I consider “ranking” anything in the top 200 places at the early stages of a project) but to reach page 1 of Google for single work keywords – not long tail, not short phrases – single words – in this case a particular medical condition for which our client is providing a medical device solution.

Again, I don’t aggressively market our SEO services in Israel because we are so much more than an “SEO company”. We work with clients on their overall online marketing of which SEO may be a tactic that we use to accomplish the goals that are defined. I call it Intelligent SEO. My belief that this is the right way to work and the right solution for our clients gets reaffirmed over and over.

Lately, everyone and his mother in Israel have been contacting us about SEO work. Ok, I admit that the fact that we rank #5 for “SEO Israel” might have something to do with that. I made sure to rank for Search Engine Optimization a few years back when I realized that is was a good foot in the door for the things we really like to do. Don’t get me wrong. SEO is important and it is something we do quite well — obviously — there are a few dozen companies who would be happy to trade places with our local ranking in Google.

But it is disappointing to me that with all that has happened online in the last years, so many companies still don’t get it. SEO is a tactic. It does not = online marketing; it’s not a strategy and by the way – it’s not rocket science either. What I try to explain to each client, when it is relevant, is that what they want is not SEO, but actually visibility and relevant traffic. They nod their heads in agreement but their eyes reveal that they don’t get it, yet.
Today, I had a contact from a Web 2.0 company seeking SEO services. And although she was focused on SEO, I think this marketing manager gets it. A 5 minute review of her site and competitor sites revealed that no way in hell would any SEO effort get them what they are looking for. Meanwhile, I am so curious to know if the Israeli SEO companies that contact her will try to sell the idea of getting top ranking for a site whose competitors have hundreds of thousands of links and millions of users.

The point of this post is, wake up!!! The era of adding some meta tags, getting some back links and mixing in a few other SEO tactics is long over as an effective way to impact your business, no matter what you do. You need to be looking at your needs and goals, your competitive landscape and figure out a strategy to get there. And you better be putting equal effort into the user experience you provide to your visitors.

The tactics? There is no lack of tactics and you better be ready to think out of the box. But if your Internet marketing strategy equals “SEO”, you will quickly be left behind in the dust by those who “get it”.

Ever since I started banking at Bank Hapoalim (and regret the day), I wanted to write this post. I am in the habit of typing in the site URL without the www. But every once in a while, I run into a site that won’t come up without it. Usually I just add it without thinking twice, but in the case of Bank Hapoalim, everything annoys me, so the fact that they don’t correct this issue after so many years, is a good reason to complain about their stupidity.
Most of you probably never thought about this issue much or know it even is an issue. But it can be important for several reasons.

First of all, it just looks bad for a potential customer or existing customer to type in:

“yourbank.com” and get Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to yourbank.com
Did you mean: www.yourbank.com?

Second, you might be losing visitors who think they have the wrong spelling or URL.

Third, it’s SEO basics to make sure that you are using only one URL – with or without the WWW and redirecting one to the other. You’ll hear arguments for both sides — with www looks more professional, without www keeps it shorter . . . But what is important is that BOTH should work and be transparent to the visitor.

As an SEO contractor takes on a project, they experience immediate pressure to show results. No matter how well they’ll try to communicate to their clients that “whitehat/textbook” practices take time, they will forever be judged by how fast Google ranking for their websites improved.

This pressure leads SEO companies to use aggressive and sometime questionable practices. Contractors use their own existing pool of web pages (some of the more questionable companies even use their other clients’ sites!) to seed backlinks to their newbie client’s website.

There are also SEO companies collaborating with one another to create a strong backlinking cooperation pool. The sophisticated companies will develop a cooperation that is dynamic and categorized by topics and relevancy, thus benefiting from stronger weight in the SE’s. This practice is called link farming. The search engines, recognizing this problematic practice that fill the Internet with bogus content and paid-for links, have vowed to fight the phenomena and punish the link-farmers. But the reality is that little has been done to successfully prevent the phenomena and it is still a prevalent tactic used by the SEOs looking for fast and dirty results for their clients.

While link-farming falls into the gray zone of SEO ethics, the following phenomena was recently brought to my attention and I see growing evidence of some SEO companies actually blackmailing their clients. It goes like this. A company asks to terminate their monthly retainer based SEO contract with Acme SEO Consultants. Acme, in turn, threatens their client to immediately replace all their existing backlinks with those of a new (competitor perhaps) client. Using dynamic engines, it will take them seconds to make the replacement and the ranking will be effected almost immediately. In many cases, the client actually paid for each of those links but probably without knowledge that they were on sites belonging to the SEO company!

If you are about to contract SEO services, there are two lessons to take from this post.

1. When contracting any SEO company, make sure your agency acts on your behalf and that you own access to every link.

2. The other lesson is to ask your SEO contractor to not deploy link farming practices but rather focus on long lasting tactics that bring real value to your website and your visitors.

Dror and I have been talking a lot about social media in this blog and among ourselves. Not surprising since we are Internet marketers since before the start of this century. But we feel we have to talk about social media more than we actually want to. So many customers are looking for social media solutions, social media consulting, social media experts. Its like what was going on a couple years ago with SEO.

Two weeks ago, the new Tranzila site went up. Itzik Nozatski is already bouncing off the walls with glee at his 15% bounce rate. Fifteen Percent!!!!!! He was kind enough to immediately notify us and credit WebWhile with the success. After all, Dror Gliksman, WebWhile’s ace Internet marketing strategist, had planned out the new Interspace site, convinced Itzik that he needed to make some serious changes in order to improve his results and create a more up-to-date image for Tranzila, the leading credit card processing solution in Israel. It’s always nice to have a happy customer and even better to have a happy customer who makes the effort to let you know that you did a great job. The results are apparent in an incredibly short time — ROI you can’t beat.

Dror worked together with Yagil of in- Design. Yagil has cooperated with WebWhile on several projects over the years and always manages to understand our crazy thinking and to breath graphic life into our creative concepts. WebWhile and Coca Interactive are now cooperating on the redesign of the leading web filter software web site and it should be up and running in the coming weeks. Looking forward to reporting on the improved results for bounce rate, click through and conversion on the Optenet PC web filter site as well.

And for all of you still looking for “the best’ SEO companies in Israel because you think you can zoom in on one tactic to solve your online marketing challenges, feel free to talk to Itzik at Interspace. He’ll explain why you need Internet Marketing consulting from experts with lots of experience, a wide understanding of business and how to do business on the Internet and a solid grasp of the web technologies (not hype) that are available and can enhance what you do.
